The TOG 1 (Tank, Heavy, TOG 1, to give it its official designation) was designed in the expectation that battlefields of the war might end up like those of the Great War. Its specifications required it to be able to cross any sort of churned-up countryside and trenches.
Initially the specifications also required the TOG 1's armour to resist 47mm anti-tank guns and 105mm field guns or howitzers at 100 yards (91m). Its main armament would be a field gun mounted in the front for dealing with thick reinforced concrete, as well as two 2-pounder anti-tank guns mounted in hull side sponsons.
It was intended to have 7.92mm Besa machine-guns that would cover all arcs, with forward, side sponson, and rear firing positions. However, the design was later revised to have smaller sponsons with only the machine-guns.
Further design work in December 1939 added the capability to carry infantry as well. It would have a large hull with side doors supported on broad tracks, with a 2-pdr gun Matilda II infantry tank turret.
