The Light Armoured Vehicle, or LAV, is one of the newest vehicles in the Marine Corps’ arsenal. Based on the Swiss MOWAG Piranha and built by General Motors in Canada, this vehicle offers the Marines a fast, highly mobile reconnaissance and light fire support vehicle.

For smoke and immediate fire support the light armored vehicle company can call on its pair of LAV-Ms. The LAV-M is an un-turreted LAV with an 81mm mortar mounted in its rear passenger compartment. A large hatched opening in the top rear of the vehicle allows the mortar to fire from its protected position inside the LAV-M.

Each light armored vehicle company has its own anti-tank vehicles in the form of the LAV-AT. The LAV-AT mounts the same TOW Hammerhead launcher as found in the Army’s M901 ITV anti-tank vehicle on the 8-wheeled LAV hull.

In Canadian Service
The 8-wheeled Coyote is a non-amphibious armoured vehicle based on the design of the LAV-25. The Coyote was designated for service with both the Regular Force and Reserve Force. Though primarily a reconnaissance vehicle, plans had it earmarked as an armoured training and infantry support vehicle much like the 6-wheeled Cougar.
