Like the motor riflemen mounted in the newer BTR-60s and BMPs transporters, the BTR-50 motor riflemen are armed with AKM assault rifles as their primary small arms. Sustained firepower is provided by PKM light machine-gun squads, and anti-tank defence is provided by teams with RPG-7 anti-tank rockets, as well as new disposable RPG-18 anti-tank weapons.

Longer range anti-tank capability comes in the form of AT-3 Sagger briefcase anti-tank guided missile systems. These weapons are quick to deploy and can knock out enemy tanks at great distances.
